In the public mind today, Conceptual Writing presents itself as a dazzling reformer, perhaps even as the inventor of a revolutionary system, if not a new orthodoxy, with grudging respect, some even suggest that Conceptual Writing has prepared the wa for other new things, a way, it’s true, which Conceptual Writing itself may ahve no real desire to travel. But this initial claim is linked by implication to the claim that Conceptual Writing is a failure and has quickly become obsolete in light of current social movements, which themselves realize in practice what Conceptual Writing must persistently disavow.
