“Er zijn nauwelijks vijf critici in Amerika en verschillende van hen liggen in slaap.” is een bekende uitspraak van Herman Melville. Het is tevens de opener van een stuk over de de boksmatch tussen twee literaire zwaargewichten: de bekroonde schrijver Jonathan Lethem versus de bekroonde criticus James Wood“. De eerste ronde begon met een essay van Lethem in de Los Angeles Review of Books getiteld “My Disappointment Critic,” waarin Lethem het over zijn woede heeft toen Wood zijn roman The Fortress of Solitude in de pan hakte.

In The Millions gaat essayist Sam Allingham dieper in op de problematiek schrijver-critcus. Hij schetst hun onderliggende motieven. Wat gaat er door een schrijver heen als een criticus zich aan het analyseren zet:

“The pain of the writer is that he has to sit still while the critic pokes through the vitals of his work and shows them to the audience. When the critical work is at its finest, the audience is like a crew of medical students standing around a doctor at work — even when we disagree with the way things are being handled, we can still see the body of evidence and draw our own conclusions. The process itself helps us learn; it adds to our understanding of literature as a whole. That is, if the body on the table would only stop complaining.”
