Vertaallab 27 Brian Johnstone – Dark Matter & The Sound of Breaking Glass
Dark Matter
i
It’s the look of panic
glimpsed in freeze frame
moments before the fall,
legs a Catherine wheel
of thwarted hope
still spinning
against the gravity
that drops the body
from the cliff
seen too late to change
direction, hear
our muffled cry.
ii
It’s the silhouette
outlined in glass
whose jagged edges hint
at effort to stop in time,
limbs akimbo
to break momentum,
while speed and motion
hurl the object
of our attention
through the surface
only clocked
seconds before impact.
iii
It’s the figure invisible
but for a hat
suspended by illusion
in space
above the manhole
tumbled down,
attention wandering
from the present
lost now to this idler
deep inside our coal hole,
hatless, black, and bruised
by time and pace.

The Sound of Breaking Glass
We visit them each week, the temples of our habit,
reach in to drop what nights have offered
secretly to colour-coded gaps,
fingers sticky with libations, ears attuned to crashes
satisfying us we’re not alone, that other acolytes
are poised beyond the screen,
their hands, like ours, clasped on the necks of bottles
we glimpse thrusting at the rubber flange,
the grille of this confessional
whose only consolations are the blessings we receive
from knowing green’s the colour of devotion,
from uplift at the sound of breaking glass.

Thank you for this, Barbara
