Teju Cole is schrijver, kunsthistoricus, straatfotograaf. Hij werd geboren in de Verenigde Staten (1975) uit Nigeriaanse ouders en groeide op in Nigeria. Op dit ogenblik leeft hij in Brooklyn. Hij schreef de novelle, Every Day is for the Thief, en de veelgeprezen roman, Open City, die door critici tot het experimentele genre gerekend wordt. Zelf vindt hij dat niet helemaal terecht:

“Many people have described it as experimental but the reality is that, compared to true experimental writers, my book is fairly tame. But because it has been published by a major house and promoted well it is reaching certain readers that this kind of book normally does not reach and one is getting a lot of “what the hell is that.””

Hij is ook heel actief op Twitter waar hij een massa aan fait divers over Lagos – de grootste stad in Afrika – met zijn volgers deelt. Het twitterproject Small Fates is een uitloper van het non-fictieboek dat hij momenteel over Lagos aan het schrijven is. Over Small Fates zegt hij het volgende:

“I also want to testify to life in Nigeria through the prism of absurd incidents and small scale disasters but with the ultimate effect of giving my readers a fairly complicated picture of contemporary Nigerian life, of contemporary Nigerian modernity. Because there are still people who would think: Oh Africans, they live in a mud hut and in the rainy season they climb up into the tree.”
